James earned 2 varsity letters as quarterback. In 1963, as a running back, he led the team in scoring, pass reception, yards gained, and kick returns. He was team captain and MVP. Jim was named to 2nd Team All-County and 1st Team All-Conference. In basketball, Jim earned 2 varsity letters.

Jim lettered for four years in track. He broke the school record in the 180 low hurdles and 880 relay. Won 1st place in conference meet in 180 low hurdles and 880 relay. He was team captain for the 100 shuttle hurdles.
