Barbara Mathess

After graduation from East Liverpool High School in 1965, Barbara attended Ohio University and graduated in 1969 with a BS Ed in health, physical education and recreation. She began her career at Beaver Local in the fall of 1969. When the Ohio High School Athletic Association recognized girls' sports, Barb became the first volleyball and basketball coach at Beaver Local. She coached both varsity and middle school volleyball for a total of 24 years amassing more than 125 varsity wins. She was also responsible for the initiation of the middle school program in the late 1980's.

She was voted Columbiana County volleyball coach-of-the-year and Evening Review coach-of-the-year in 1988 and in 1991; her team was the first OV AC volleyball champions from Beaver Local.

Barb has contributed to Beaver Local Athletics in many other ways over the years including being scorekeeper for basketball and wrestling, being an active member of the booster club, and holding office in the Beaver Local Athletic Hall of Fame from its inception until the present day.

Barb continued coaching even after her retirement from teaching in 2001 (after 32 years). She and her husband, Steve, have been married thirty-eight years and reside in Wellsville.
