Van was one of the top wrestlers in Beaver Local history. He started wrestling at the age of five in Hoppel's gym and started wrestling competitively through the Beaver Local Wrestling Club. Van was an instinctive wrestler and tough competitor. During his high school career under Coach Walt Maslen, Van garnered many honors. These honors include State Champion his senior year, Hoppel Tournament Champion, Beaver Local High School Most Valuable Player, Eastern Ohio Wrestling League Tournament Most Valuable Player, All County Wrestler, Wadsworth Tournament Champion, Sectional Champion, District Champion, and placed sixth in the nation his senior year, giving him the title of High School All American. He also received the Harry Greenwood Memorial Award and was a scholar athlete, placing him in the top ten percent of his class, academically. Van recorded many wins during his high school career. His record was 121-28 and he was the first Beaver Local wrestler to record over 100 wins. After graduation from high school, he received a scholarship to wrestle at Cleveland State University.
